TDIU
What is it, what can cause it, rating breakdown information and more.
Who is this page for?
If your service-connected conditions make it hard or impossible to maintain steady employment, you may qualify for TDIU- even if your current rating doesn’t reflect the full impact on your daily life. Many Veterans don’t realize they could receive compensation at the 100% rate through TDIU. It’s especially helpful for Veterans who:
Work reduced hours due to service-connected conditions
Are on light or limited duty
Have been denied a higher rating
Struggle to earn a consistent living
Common limitations include chronic pain, fatigue, migraines, restricted mobility, and mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, or difficulty focusing.
If you’re reading this and aren’t sure you meet the TDIU requirements, our medical team of nurses can review your conditions and daily limitations to help determine if TDIU may be an option. Schedule your review today.
What is TDIU?
TDIU, or Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability, allows Veterans to receive disability compensation at the 100% rate, even if their combined rating is below 100%. The VA grants TDIU when service-connected disabilities prevent a Veteran from maintaining substantially gainful employment- work that provides income above the poverty level.
WHat qualifies you for TDIU?
The VA looks at a combination of rating requirements and functional impact for TDIU. You may qualify for TDIU if you meet one of the following:
One service-connected disability rated at 60% or higher
Two or more service-connected disabilities with one rated at least 40% or more and a combined rating of 70% or higher
Meeting these ratings alone isn’t enough- the VA also considers whether your conditions make steady employment impossible. Veterans who don’t meet these thresholds may still qualify under extraschedular TDIU, which requires strong medical evidence.
How ForTheVeteran helps Veterans pursue a TDIU claim
TDIU claims are complex and evidence-heavy. Our team provides:
Comprehensive medical reviews of your conditions
Targeted questions about employability
Gap analysis of past claims to uncover missed details
Unlike companies that rely on templates, we offer personalized support and claim strategies tailored to your situation.
What to expect if you qualify for TDIU
If approved, you’ll receive compensation at the 100% disability rate, even if your combined rating is lower. This can mean greater financial stability and access to additional benefits tied to a 100% rating. Veterans on TDIU may engage in marginal employment, but not full-time work.
Are your service-connected conditions making it hard to work? Don’t navigate the complex TDIU claim process alone. Let ForTheVeteran help you determine if you qualify for compensation at the 100% rate. Start your free evaluation today!
